Juices, Cleanses & Detox. Oh, My!

Tuesday, December 30, 2014
In preparation for the new year, I decided that I would try a juice cleanse. Groupon had a deal for a Peeled Juice Bar in Chicago, so I thought it would be a great way to jump-start healthy living and to detox before the new year. I ordered the 3 Day Classic Cleanse which consisted of 6 bottles of juice to drink per day. Couldn't be that hard, right?

DAY 1:
I woke up ready to start the day. First up, Green Lantern. I'm used to having my coffee in the morning, so this was completely different than my normal routine. I am in no way a regular juicer, and this one didn't taste so great to me, but it wasn't too, too bad. If you're a fan of wheatgrass shots, this drink is for you. Feeling a straw would make it go down easier (and it did!), I finished drink #1 and was anxious to see what the next one would taste like in 2 or so hours.

Next up, Maroon 5. There is no sugarcoating this; I did not like this. I couldn't even finish this one. Not a fan.

My third drink of the day was the Haute Lemonade. After reading a few reviews about this one, I was terrified to try it, but I actually enjoyed it! Lemonade with a kick, thanks to the cayenne pepper. This one went down the easiest, in my opinion, but after I finished, I didn't want to think about having any more liquids.

The next 2 were repeats of Green Lantern and Maroon 5. Again, I took a few sips of Maroon 5 and had to sit that one out.

Last one on the menu for the day was the Cashew Milk. I thought this one would be delicious, but I was disappointed. I don't know if I was just over drinking my meals throughout the day or if I didn't like the taste of this one, but I drank half and called it quits.

I was pretty hungry throughout the day, missed chewing food, and was very tempted to eat something. It was definitely an experience, though!

What I learned after Day 1? Juicing is not for me. I do want to try some of the other juices Peeled Juice Bar has (Adams Apple, for one), but as for the cleanse, one day was enough and instead of finishing days 2 and 3, I went out and bought a new pair of running shoes.

I chose Asics Gel-Craze TR and absolutely love them! It feels like I'm running on clouds and they were perfect for running along the beach on my quick Florida trip!

If you're looking to try a juice cleanse, I would recommend starting small. The 1-3 day cleanses are probably your best bet, but for me, healthy diet and exercise (with an occasional cold-pressed juice) is the way to go.

FarFetch Fairy Tales

Monday, December 29, 2014
I am a huge Mindy Kaling fan. If you haven't read her book (Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)) or watched The Mindy Project, put that on the top of your to-do list. I think she is hilarious in everything that she does and these holiday GIFs she captioned for FarFetch.com are no exception. Here are 2 of my favorites:

I found ABD about a year ago through the blogosphere and it has quickly become one of my top small shops. My personal favorite is the 'Everyday I'm Hustin' mug (shown above / link below). I use it everyday! ABD also features apparel, notebooks, notepads, travel mugs, and tumblers.

As I'm sure you noticed in ABD's post, there is an adorable planner featured next to the mug. Well, after much curiosity and digging around online, I discovered that pictured was the Day Designer by Whitney English. I've used Day Runner for years (11 to be exact), but was looking for something that fit my current lifestyle and needs. Ladies - this planner is magical. I've included a link below for the 2015 version - available online soon!

I find much delight in discovering new products through word of mouth. After reading many reviews on the Day Designer, I stumbled upon Lara Casey's shop. I loved the tag 'Make It Happen,' so I dove in further to see what she had to offer. The PowerSheets were an obvious standout. I work in a creative field and many times I get excited about a project, but find it very hard to follow through. The PowerSheets were made to help strategically plan action steps to finish those projects and I'm excited to give them a test run in the new year.

The Perfect Pumps

Monday, November 24, 2014
I've been looking for a comfortable, fashionable pair of black pumps for a while. I was always risking comfort for fashion, but then I found Levity's Celeste pump. These are the most comfortable heels I have ever owned! The elastic straps crossing the front of the foot help to keep your feet nice and snug in the shoe so that your feet aren't sliding all over the place. Know how your heels sometimes slip out of the shoes? Not with these!

I get compliments on these heels everywhere I go! They are practical enough to wear to work, but sexy enough to wear out.

These are my absolute favorite shoes. I might buy another pair just in case I wear these out!

If you're looking for a hot, yet comfortable, pair of heels, these are definitely worth a second look.

Travel Essentials

Sunday, October 12, 2014
Over the past few months, I've found myself traveling a lot more frequently for work. That being said, I'm here to tell you about my favorites for your everyday adventures.

The Classic
 photo longchamp2_zps18ab44fe.png
Longchamp bags are light as air, yet extremely durable. I've owned the Le Pilage Neo Large (shown above) for 2 years and have seen very little wear (slight fraying on the bottom corners of the bag). Keep in mind, my everyday essentials include a 13" MacBook Pro, notebook, some work files, wallet, and a small makeup bag. It might not seem like a lot, but the weight of these items add up fast. If you are a light traveler, you're less likely to see as much wear as I do. This bag also features a small pocket in the center near the opening. Perfect for keys or in my case, a Metro card. I've tried many totes in the past, but this one is by far my favorite. It's also currently in stock at Bloomingdales and available in Black, Navy, and a beautiful Plum called Bilberry. Retail: $180

My Latest Obsession

As much as Longchamp's bags cover my everyday commutes in Manhattan, long-distance travels have become a bit tricky considering the tiny pocket made for only a few items. I found myself one too many times, digging through my bag for something as small as a passport, and only to accidentally knock it over and have EVERYTHING spill out of it. Ugh. My solution? Lo & Sons - The O.M.G.

After stumbling across this beauty (which also features either a lavender or camel interior), my nerves have seemed to rest. Another plus aside from the many comparments, is the slip behind the back of the bag and made for easy stowing on top of your luggage. Retail: $275

Lo & Sons is currently running a promotion of 20% off
all orders over $150 using the code: FALLFRIENDS14

Happy Travels!

Urban Decay All Nighter

Wednesday, August 6, 2014

Urban Decay has a lot of great products, but this is one of my absolute favorites. I would have a gorgeous smoky eye, the perfect amount of blush and then halfway into my night, I would notice that my makeup was NOTHING like it was when I left the house. My eye shadow would be half off, eyeliner smudged and slowly melting down my face, cheeks paler than pale because my blush completely faded. I would have given anything to find something that would make my makeup stay on and look great all night.

Lucky for me, I found Urban Decay's All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray. This spray keeps your makeup looking beautiful for up to 16 hours, preventing melting, fading and cracking! The best part? It comes out in a light mist, doesn't feel sticky at all and dries so quickly that you'll be set and ready before you even put the cap back on the bottle (it's vegan, too!). UD All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray has gotten me through weddings, date nights, and even long work days. Once you use this amazing product, there is no going back to life without it! Get yours here.

Saturday, July 26, 2014

Hi there. Thanks for visiting! The Violet Hour is a beauty, fashion, and lifestyle blog created by two friends, 790 miles apart (CHI>NYC). Lauren and Chelsea met 7 years ago in Chicago and although in different cities now, have always managed to stay connected. TVH was created in hopes to keep that spark alive, as well as to entertain and educate readers through our daily encounters and experiences. Here's to a lovely road ahead!
